Ear monitors for musicians
A more advanced way to protect hearing whilst monitoring sound is to use a personal in ear monitor (IEM).
The most critical component of any IEM is the earpiece.
There are several custom and non-custom 'phones to choose from, and each offers different features.
Custom ear 'phones are available with single and dual miniature drivers.
Some are geared to allow high levels of volume.
Others offer enhanced bass response.
Some incorporate a port which can allow sonic bleed of ambient sound.

Others take into account that some of us unwittingly 'pump up the volume' beyond a level that's safe and give a full frequency response but with restricted maximum output.
IEMs can be custom made to the exact shape of your ear or a universal fit.
Universal fit products can be used "off the shelf" with a disposable tip and are less expensive than custom made.
We find custom made monitors give better overall performance, greater attenuation of damaging frequencies and are more comfortable to wear than a "one size fits all" model.
